Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge delivers a compelling race thriller that leaves a significant impact until a certain point. The story centers on Terry Richmond, a Black man, who is riding his bicycle along a remote road in Louisiana, with Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast” playing in his ears. In a sudden turn of events, he is violently hit from behind by a pursuing police vehicle, subsequently confronted at gunpoint and forcefully pressed against the car by two officers. For about 15 minutes, viewers are presented with a traffic stop that has tragically led to the deaths of many Black individuals. Saulnier heightens the tension by expertly juxtaposing the aggressive behavior of the officers, who are clearly looking for any reason to draw their firearms, with Terry’s unwavering determination to resist the overt harassment he endures.
